“Remontage” consists in pumping up the wine from the bottom of the vat in order to sprinkle the “cap” (grape skin and pips which rise to the surface). The process optimises the extraction of colour and tannins.

Classification Letter A. This is a classification established by the Casa do Douro, revised annually. It is based principally on the quality of the soil, the altitude, the micro-climate, and the method of cultivation of the vine in each parcel. The parcels are classified in this way from A (the best score) to F.

António Manuel de Sousa Pinto Agrellos, 63, hails from a family that has been producing and trading in Port wine from the Douro Valley for four generations.
He was schooled at the 'Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto', and also, in 1976/77, in the areas of tasting, knowledge and chemistry of wine at the Institut d'Oenologie with the University of Bordeaux. He has been the Technical Director of Quinta do Noval since 1993.


Since 1994, he has been recognised in the world of wine for the excellence of his production at Quinta do Noval. He has twice won recognition from the Portuguese press as Oenologist of the year for fortified wines. Over the past 15 years, the Port and wines from Douro de Quinta do Noval have regularly been listed amongst the best in their category. Three Quinta do Noval Vintage Ports have achieved a maximum 100 point rating.
