“Remontage” consists in pumping up the wine from the bottom of the vat in order to sprinkle the “cap” (grape skin and pips which rise to the surface). The process optimises the extraction of colour and tannins.

Classification Letter A. This is a classification established by the Casa do Douro, revised annually. It is based principally on the quality of the soil, the altitude, the micro-climate, and the method of cultivation of the vine in each parcel. The parcels are classified in this way from A (the best score) to F.

“I am always ready to try grape varieties from other parts of the world. I simply feel it essential that they adjust well to their new environment and integrate as if they were Douro grapes. As it happens, Syrah adapts perfectly. It expresses a very Douro-style personality rather than being typically Syrah. 


Just for fun, we decided to bottle a small quantity of pure Syrah, which we called “Labrador Syrah” in honour of António Agrellos’ dog.”

2007 was the first vintage year for Labrador Syrah.


GRAPE VARIETIES

100% Syrah

The expression of Syrah at Quinta do Noval is practically that of a local grape variety. 

Syrah has become steeped in the local soil, which it expresses to perfection.


VINIFICATION

We use the “remontage” method for wine in stainless steel vats, with temperatures held at 26ºC.


MATURING

All wine is matured in French oak casks for approximately 18 months.
